Weekly Update
January 13th:
Hello Second Grade Parents,
This week's update is coming one day early since I had an extra minute after school. Just a friendly reminder that we do not have school on Monday and our 100th day celebration will be next Friday. Remember the theme is 100 years in the past, so dress like it's 1922 (think Great Gatsby). Thank you to those who signed up to donate a food item to our 100th day trail mix. Please send in the item by Wednesday of next week so I can go shopping for whatever still remains. Here is a recap of our week and a look ahead for next week.
ELA: This week in ELA we read a biography on Wilma Rudolph. We learned all about Wilma's accomplishments and all the hard work she put in to get there. This week we worked with recognizing and building compound words. Since we have a short week next week we will not be having a reading assessment.
Math: This week we wrapped up chapter 5 and began chapter 6 on subtraction. In this chapter we will work on subtracting two digit numbers using regrouping. Next week we will work on making models to subtract two digit numbers with regrouping.
Science: This week we wrapped up chapter 5 on our fabulous planet Earth. We took a closer look at ways land changes over time. We read about different fast and slow land changes that cause our planet to change over time. Next week we will be reviewing and testing on chapter 5 on Thursday. I have attached review questions with the answers highlighted to this email for you to review at home. I have also attached the three science lessons from our textbook so you can review at home.
Health: This week in health we learned all about the respiratory system . We talked about the main job of the lungs and how the respiratory system works to help us live. Next week we will be working with the muscular system.
Social Studies: This week we finally completed the Native American unit. With the breaks and project presentations, this unit took way longer than anticipated. We learned all about the Northwest Native Americans and the way they lived their lives. Next week we will be covering Martin Luther King Jr. for social studies.
Spelling: Next week we WILL be having a spelling test, however there will only be one list. That means all students will work with the same words. We will be working with homophones all week in class to help them prepare for this spelling test.
